… Then it was like old times in that echoing hall,
Proud talk and the people happy,
Loud and excited; until soon enough
The crown did pass from one to another;
Kings came and went; Baldric now ruled from that storied place
Golden band upon his brow; beside him sat wolf-wise
Breyla, Queen of the North. And ever at their side,
Bold Gwendolyn, Horse-Lady of Aldburg, stood in defence
Of her Ring-Giver and her oaths. Her mail-shirt glinted,
Hard and hand-linked; the high-gloss iron
Of her armour, no doubt had rung upon the anvil
When the smith stuck with hammer.
Time went by; and thus it was that Gwendolyn was
Called to saddle her mare and ride to the lands where
Winter’s breath was rarely known. The sun dazzled on that
Field of Ravens where her Ring-Giver did battle. So she duly arrived
In her joyous war-graith and gear and stacked her wide shield
Of the toughest hardwood amidst the wall,
Then charged upon the enemy; battle-dress
And weapons clashed. At day's end she collected the spears
Of those retainers of the Middle King she had slain in a seafarer’s stook,
A stand of greyish tapering ash. Over fifty shafts were the proof
Of this hero’s prowess; neither thane nor thrall could stand before her
When her blade stuck like a hammer.
The war-bands returned home. Gwendolyn sat on the benches,
First oarswoman to her thane, Varenko of the Rus. Thus they arrived
Unto to a great feast in the lands of the Bear-Folk, where Baldric spake:
“Be acclaimed for strength, dear Gwendolyn; and
Delight in this weapon from Our armoury; may you prosper with it!
You have won renown: you are known to all men
Far and near, now and forever. So, my lady,
I wish you a lifetime’s luck and blessings
To enjoy this treasure. As it was when that great
Prince Osis reigned, so here each companion is true to the other,
Loyal to lord, loving in spirit.” Gwendolyn raised aloft that storied
Weapon; and bore Thorbjorn’s Hammer.
Done on this 8th day of September, AS. 53, as we celebrate Feast of the Bear.

Gwendolyn of Aldburg, Award of the Scarlet Banner, 2015
... As it was in days gone by,
When the Spear-Skraels and they who ruled them
Had Courage and Greatness. We have heard
much of those bygone Prince's heroic campaigns
alongside the Bear-Folk and the Wyrm-Born Kings of old.
Never be it said that those who followed them
Be nithing at war; strong are those born even now.
The powers of Quilliam wax and his worth is proved
Not only by Domhnail, blessed Queen of all those
Who call the Wolven-realm home; but by the strength
Of those who take the blood-worm to hand
Beneath the Scarlet Banner.
Thus did the Breaker-of-Rings seek forth one
Of the Skrael-Shieldlings to stand before him
And his lady, in their lofty hall.
So was Quilliam sent forth Gwendolyn,
Horse-Lady of Aldburg, White Ravens of Othin
Borne proudly upon her battle-shield.
Bright mail and tall helm she wore, but none
Outshone her martial pride; for trained had she
At the feet of her Uncle, who taught her never
Before the foemen yield, but to stand tall
As any fighting man who put arm to shield
Beneath the Scarlet Banner.
"What kind of Lady are you arrive
Rigged out for combat in your coat of maille
Riding here from distant Harrowgate Heath
Upon thy dun-skin mare? I have reigned
As King for some time, yet rarely before
Has a mightier man-at-arms been seen here
As stands here now; unless I am mistaken,
She is truly noble. No mere hanger-on in a hero's armour."
"I belong by birth to your people, the Skraels
And owe allegiance to none but you, great king."
"Then stand, and bear your arms and gear, and I shall guide you,
Beneath your Scarlet Banner."

Travis Vincent Greywolf, Award of the Scarlet Banner, 2014
From Siegfried, Rex, King of the Ealdormerans, and Ragni,
Regina, Queen of the free folk of the northlands, to Our Heirs, Lawspeaker,
Dukes, Duchesses, Counts, Countesses, Viscounts, Viscountesses, Barons,
Baronesses, members of Our royal orders, and to all others to whom these
presents may come, greetings.
As history records, the Society was first brought to Our
realm by Sir Finnvarr de Taahe, known as the Iron Duke, and member of the
Orders of Chivalry, the Pelican and the Laurel. This founding father was later
to become the husband of Her Majesty, and began to gather around him a
household of the worthy and the brave. Amongst those valiant few, Finnvarr took
two erstwhile youths to squire, to stand as his vassals and as brothers one to
the other. One of these squires would go on to become not only a knight in his
own right, but indeed to become a king. This was His Majesty Siegfried. The
other squire is known for wandering the world, always in search of adventure
and fame, all to bring glory to his knight and household. In times of need or
of war, this good gentle always returned to the fold and took up what ever tool
was needed to aid his knight, his fellow squires and the other members of House
De Taahe. With noble harness he is known at the Pennsic Wars for his diligence
and skill with the sword. And this man is Travis Vincent Greywolf.
Know now that His Majesty looks kindly upon his
brother-at-arms, as does Her Majesty, and They would have it known that They
hold him in such high regard that They would bestow upon him an Award of the
Scarlet Banner, so that all my know he is a proud and worthy fighter of the
Kingdom of Ealdormere.
So was this done, at [EVENT] on the [DAY] of [MONTH] in the
forty-ninth year of the Society, in witness whereof We have set Our hand and
seal.

Aiden Scoetend aet theaem Mistigum Merum, Award of the Scarlet Banner, 2014
In the name of the great Siegfried, lawful Ard Ri of All Ealdormere, who is as bold as a lion and who knows well sword-fame;
And in the name of the wise Ragni, to whom is born many red-speared warriors, and from whom treasures of all colours flow;
I praise the skillful man of the race of Fergus, Aidan Scoetend aet thaem Mistigum Merum - spirited in adversity, who neither grovels before the foeman, nor hordes treasure.
To bold Aidan, let all, from the mightiest Ri to the lowliest of slaves, know of your bow-skill, that neither sharp wind nor cold rain can cause falter to!
Keen-eyed is Aidan, whose arrows fly faster than even the golden chariot of Cú Chulainn! Whose arrows strike as true as sword of Brian of Old!
Loyal is Aidan, who wears the colours of his home well and with great pride! Let him now wear scarlet, as the Banner his Ard Ri now bestows upon him!
With these words do I finish my praise, and do my gracious sovereigns, Siegfried and Ragni, do this honourable deed on the Feast of St. Cathan, Anno Societatis XLIX, as they reign wisely in the lands of Ramshaven at Fruits of our Labours VII.

Order of Gawain for Ari Finason
In accordance with all that is proper, attend and bear witness that we, Kenric and Avelina, Rex and Regina Orientalis have observed with great interest the actions of Ari Finason of Endewearde.
Though a young man still, his courage on the tourney field and his confidence and grace with rapier and sword have foretold the warrior he has become. He is greater still in fairness, generousity of spirit and thoughtfulness to others. Whether lending his strength to the humblest of tasks or rising to the occasion and bringing swift aid to those in need, his kindness and amiablity are a treasure to Our kingdom.
We therefore commend him and welcome him into the Order of Gawain. In witness whereof, before all here present, do We thereby set Our signs manual to make of these letters firm and binding on this 25th day of January A.S. XVLIII at Market Day at Birka in Our Barony of Stonemarche.

Brennen Suibhne, Award of the Scarlet Banner, 2013
To all those who shall see or hear these present letters
Nigel and Adrielle otherwise called King and Queen of Ealdormere greeting and
al humble recommendation. Equity requires and reason ordains that men virtuous
and of noble courage be rewarded for their merits by renown and that not only
their persons in this mortal life so brief and transitory but after them those
who shall issue and be procreated of their bodies may be in all places of great
honour perpetually shining before others by certain signs and shows of honour
and gentility. And therefore We, King and Queen above said who not only by
common renown but also by the report and testimony of other noble men worthy of
credence am truly advertised and informed that Brennen Suibhne has long persued
feats of arms with the blade and as well in this as in other his affairs has
borne himself valiantly and conducted himself honourably so that he has
deserved well and is well worthy that henceforth and perpetually and for ever
he is given an Award of the Scarlet Banner and is counted numbered and received
among the number and in the company of other ancient gentle and noble
Ealdormereans. In witness whereof We, King and Queen above named have signed
with Our hands and sealed with Our seal these presents. Made and given the
twenty-sixth day of October, in the year of the society forty-eight in Our

Award of the Scarlet Banner, and further the right to bear the badge of the

Since We find that in the Shires of Trinovantia Nova and the
March of St. Martins there is an Ealdormerean citizen who has long proven

Lord Micah of Brighton Hall, Order of the Tygers Combatant
We bring forth Lord Micah of
Brighton Hall, to join as brother those who are as enchanted by the fields of
war as he, the Companions of the Order of the Tygers Combatant. Here we
laud his prowess and delight of all that one embraces in the fight. But hear,
assembled ones of this fine court, the history of this man whom we exhort:
A farmboy once, as all good
heroes are,
He’d run across the
Northshield fields afar,
heroes are,
He’d run across the
Northshield fields afar,
A lanky lad then, lean and
fair and tall
With large sticks he would
make the straw man fall.
A sapling bow he used to
keep at bay
The spurred cock whose beak
would ankles flay.
He frightened tinkers
who would tread the land
And helped his family’s
influence expand.

The spurred cock whose beak

As he grew up, his weapons
did as well
From humble stick to staff,
from straw to pell.
From charging through the
fields of wheat and hay
To charging through the
fields of foes to slay.

fourth rewrite, I just couldn’t get the tale short enough! At some point,
I will just tell the tale in full and feel like I’ve done my job!
